How can India qualify for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals after 58-run loss to New Zealand? US
After their opening game, the Indian women’s team was compelled to evaluate all of their options in order to secure a spot in the knockout stages. India’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup have been severely damaged after a crushing 58-run loss to New Zealand on Friday, October 4, in the Group A match at the Dubai International Stadium.
With a pitiful net run rate of -2.900 due to the narrow loss, the Women in Blue are positioned last in the points standings. If Harmanpreet Kaur and team want to advance to the semi-finals, they will need to rely on others and execute a number of things well.
India still has three matches to salvage their reputation after being drawn into the group of death with Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Winning the remaining contests with a healthy margin can be enough for India to stay in the top two, but other alternatives also need to be accounted for.
India has a good chance to reach four points against their Asian rivals, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. They will end with four points if they defeat heavyweights and favorites Australia and win the matches by a wide margin. India would have to hope that either Australia or New Zealand loses two of its group stage matches if such a situation materializes.
It’s improbable that the Alyssa Healy-led team, going for their fourth straight championship, will drop two of their group games. Therefore, India’s best chance is for New Zealand to lose to Australia and hope that either Sri Lanka or Pakistan can defeat them as well (assuming that they win two of their remaining matches).
In that case, the net run-rate will determine who takes the second position. On the net run-rate front, New Zealand has a significant advantage. However, the Women in Blue have a chance to advance if they lose badly in the group stage and India is able to change their record in the remaining games.
India set to face Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the coming days
When India plays Pakistan on Sunday, October 6, they will have a chance to immediately turn things around. On October 9, they will play Sri Lanka again in the 2024 Asia Cup final. On October 13 in Sharjah, they will play Australia in their last group stage match.
The last time India missed out on the semi-finals of the competition was during the 2016 edition on home soil.
