Any Indian player who has retired from international cricket at least five years prior might enter the auction as an uncapped player, according to a provision that the IPL adopted back in 2008. Since it was eliminated in 2021, none of the IPL teams have used this regulation. This regulation allows MS Dhoni, who retired in 2020, to continue as an uncapped player.

This rule has been brought back for the next season, and CSK may choose to use their talismanic skipper in one of their retention places. Dhoni’s retention price, if he is kept, will decrease from ₹12 crore in 2022 to ₹4 crore.
